DURHAM SNAP SKID, MCDONALD STREAK CONTINUES
(Toledo, OH) Durham snapped a four-game skid with an impressive 5-1 win over Toledo on Saturday. The Bulls (47-53) are 1-1 on an eight-game road trip through Ohio.
Scoreless heading into the sixth, Durham broke through against right Colby Lewis. Delmon Young, who had three hits, singled to center with one out, and moved to third on Kevin Witt's double. After Darnell McDonald popped out, Shawn Riggans tripled to right center, giving Durham a 2-0 lead. Riggans then capped a three-run rally when he scored on a wild pitch.
That was enough for Bulls pitching. J.P. Howell (3-2), Jose Rodriguez, and Jason Childers (2nd save) combined to allow just seven hits and two walks, while striking out 16, the most Durham has fanned this year in a nine-inning game. Toledo scored its only run in thesixth when a fly ball was lost in the lights that extended the inning.
Durham did add some insurance in the ninth. Brent Butler doubled on a fly to right that was lost in the lights, and went to third on a wild pitch. He scored on B.J. Upton's line drive sac fly to left. Ben Zobrist then singled, and scored the final run on Young's line drive triple to center.
Young and Riggans each had three hits, and Darnell McDonald singled and walked twice, with the hit extending his streak to 27 games. That's tied for the longest streak in minor league baseball this year.
Durham meets Toledo tomorrow night at 6:30 as Chris Seddon starts against the Mud Hens. Coverage on AM 620 the Bull begins at 6 p.m.
